6 Ways To Know You Need a New Website

Today we sat down with Willie from The Pancake Movement and asked him about the ways to know you need a new website. If any of these points pertain to you, then you need a new website.

1. People who visit your website ask you what you do.

  • If you have a pastry company and your home page is a picture of puppies, then you probably need a new website.  Your website needs to portray what your company does. A visitor needs to know this within the first few seconds of viewing your homepage.

2. Your embarrassed to show your website to other people.

  • Excuses, excuses, excuses. Every time someone asks to see your website, it’s under construction, it needs updating, or they should go to your Facebook instead (Facebook should never take place of your website). This is a definite red flag. You can’t tell people your website is under construction forever, so it’s time to get a new one.

3. There are no links for website visitors to further interact with your company.

  • The key word of the day is “Social Media.” Always put your social media links on your website. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, you better chase it down before it runs you over. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, ect. These are all tools that will help your company grow. If people like your company, they want to know whats happening on the inside.

4. Someone has time to take a shower while your page loads.

  • Always remember this rhyme: “Make sure your site is really light”. Don’t use anything that will slow your site down, such as large images, heavy fonts, extra code that doesn’t need to be there, ect. No one wants to be on a website that is taking forever to load.  ABSOLUTELY do NOT use flash. It’s old school technology and mobile devices cannot view this. You want your website to be as accessible as possible.

5. If you don’t have a website.

  • This is a given. If you want your company to grow and succeed you need a way to connect with the public. Facebook, Tumblr, and Blogspot are noa valid websites.

6. If your website’s font is Comic Sans or Papyrus.

  • The way your website looks is extremely important. It is the first impression of your company brand. You need to use professional looking fonts. Some great fonts can be found at Google Web Fonts. You also need to use colors that contrast well. The colors you choose shouldn’t be too loud and should be easy on the eyes. A tool that can  help you choose colors is Kuler by Adobe. Poor design of your website will reflect how professional your company looks to your visitors.
